Signs of Great Web Design

Purpose, Performance, Responsiveness, and Trust

Purposeful

Whether your site is hosting a blog, making sales on ecommerce, or representing your business or organization, it should be designed with the end user in mind, Quality content should clearly convey what the website is about and what the reader will get when they click. It should be easy to use by visitors who come to browse to get an impression of your purpose, or to search and receive answers to specific questions. Consistent branding, colors, and fonts will provide a clear image of your brand, with calls to action strategically placed and well directed.

Performing

A great site performs, for both its users and web crawlers. Navigation should be clear and easy with fast load times. A blend of high-impact headlines, easy to skim bullet points, long-form text, and images are part of a successful site layout. Not only will the design be visually appealing, but it will be optimized for social and web search.

Responsive

It’s needless to say that web site content needs to display correctly across screens of differing shape and dimensions. But, over half of today’s web searches happen on a mobile screen, and that percentage will continue to climb. A highly responsive site won’t just display on mobile, but will prioritize mobile layout in its design.

Secure

The warning triangle in your search bar is never a good sign, but there’s more to site security than SSL certificates. A great website builds trust in other ways. For a site to feel trustworthy, it needs to look genuine. It needs reliable contact information that is consistent with listings on other platforms. Stock photos can be beautiful, but real photos of your storefront, your staff, your product build trust. Another way to add credibility is with current content that is updated regularly. Sites that display outdated information, or promote events happening in 2018.

In Summary

No one wants to browse a confusing, slow loading site that looks like it was built before cell phones. A great site will be as clear and easy to navigate as it is beautiful. It will be full of fast loading, informative content that is updated and added regularly.

It’s not hard to design an aesthetic site that attracts visitors to your site and encourages them to use your product or service. If you’re launching a new start-up, or considering a redesign, I’d enjoy getting to know more about your website goals and create a plan to achieve them.
